My daughter is interested in homesteading, so I thought this book might be interesting, and it was.
I literally knew nothing about homesteading, and i learned an awful lot. This book is very much for beginners and offers a step-by-step guide to starting a simple homestead you can build on.
Early steps include getting your mindset right, setting goals, and learning local zoning regulations.
The first step in actually setting up your homestead is to plant fruit trees. I wouldn’t have known where to start with choosing fruit trees, but this book showed me how to find the right trees for my climate zone and how to test my soil and choose the right trees for my soil type, then how to plant and care for the trees.
Later steps involve creating a container garden and raising small livestock like chickens and rabbits. My daughter has been very interested in raising chickens, so I was very interested in this section. I learned how to choose the right breeds, how to build a coop, how to care for and feed our flock, and how to troubleshoot problems that might arise.
Later I learned about eco-friendly living, including collecting rainwater, setting up solar panels, and creating natural cleaning products, which I’m planning to do this week.
We also learned how to store and preserve food, how to manage our homestead over time, how to budget and make financial plans, how to troubleshoot issues, and how to upskill and grow our homestead. We’re not ready to buy five acres and go full homestead, but we have the roots to get started.
